Efforts to get menubar integration included in this release are underway. An October release might also enable testing with Apple's forthcoming Leopard, although release timing of Leopard is obviously unknown at this point. If you'd like to be a part of by testing the next MacGIMP release, email Mat with your request and hardware parameters.

Major Release: MacGIMP 2.4 Set for September 2007

The MacGIMP project, led by Mat Caughron, is pleased to announce that the first build of the GIMP 2.4 release candidate for Mac OS X has been compiled. This build is universal, meaning that it will run natively on both PowerPC and Intel x86 platforms. It is a goal of the MacGIMP project to remain faithful to the GPL and to provide complete source and build information to all who request it. This is a major step forward in the availability of the GIMP for the Macintosh platform, and the software will be available for sale shortly on MacGIMP.com. Please support our efforts by having your company or school purchase their own copy of MacGIMP in September. Upgrade pricing will be available. In handling the GIMP 2.4 dependencies for the build of MacGIMP, the following libraries were compiled:

The GIMP documentation team has been hard at work on a major revision of the multi-lingual GIMP documentation. PDF editions of the GIMP documentation are available in these languages: Cestina, Deutsch, English, (Chinese), Francais, Italiano, Netherlands, Hrvatski, Norwegian.

For non-developer GIMP users who desire to assist, the Tips for Contributing to GIMP Documentation on the main GIMP wiki is a great place to start.

developer.imendio.com has complete information on the effort to port Gtk+ 2 to Mac OS X natively so that you can run Gtk+ applications without X11 on Mac OS X. The imendio port of GTK requires Mac OS X 10.4 or newer.

The sourceforge project called SeaShore is a Cocoa effort by Mark Pazolli to make an image editor.

wiki.gimp.org has various helpful comments on building GTK and various components required to compile the GIMP if you are a developer or comfortable with a compiler and associated dependencies.

Of course, MacGIMP remains the favorite and is the easiest and most supported way to run the GIMP on Mac OS X and is aggressively priced at $29.95. You can expect the price to increase significantly before this coming academic year begins.

MacGIMP is a great tool for cell phone background image customization. Resize or crop an image to 172 x 143 pixels for Nokia Series 60 phones and to 128 x 128 for Nokia Series 40 phones. Nokia devices support .bmp, .jpg, .gif, and .png image formats. If your image is in a different format, you should save it to one of the supported formats. See hack number 46 in the

.RAS Bug Potentially Bites GIMPers

The GIMP can be set up to use the SUNRAS plugin to process .RAS file. This uncommonly used module has been found vulnerable to a buffer overflow in set_color_table which leads to code execution. There is a milw0rm exploit and a Secunia advisory for this issue. There are no current plans to release a fix or patch specifically for OSX. The vulnerable code is in sunras.c at around line 860.

New York Times Acknowledges the GIMP Exists

Peter Waylan was given the honors at the New York Times to acknowledge that the GIMP exists. Wow. It's nice to see an acknowledgment from that Old Grey Rag, that the GIMP does indeed offer similar functionality to Photoshop. Note that the GIMP isn't mentioned in its own right, but merely as an alternative to the San Jose California company's commercial software. Most of the world is using the GIMP to edit their photos, and Photoshop is primarily an American phenom. We know. The New York Times has yet to figure that out. Welcome aboard, Peter.

Summer of Code Template

When the GIMP project attracts Summer of Code participants, we all win. The participant gets paid to code for the summer. The mentor gets code written. And the rest of us get new features. Doesn't matter whether the platform is Windows, MacOSX, Linux or any other. So in that spirit, Mat wrote up a Summer of Code template and posted it online via the docs.google.com services, that you can use to submit your idea to Google. The goal is for this to increase the chances that the GIMP community gets projects chosen by Google. UPDATE: Google has revealed the official summer of code template.

Six Years of Covering the GIMP on Mac OS X

This MacGIMP.org server was first set up in the summer of 2000, and the initial news story (Welcome to MacGIMP) posted on 2000-10-27. The Wayback Archive picked up on MacGIMP.org in 2001 and still contains the early days of the site. In the last six years, 315 stories have been posted here, many submitted by members of the GIMP users community who have selected the Macintosh as their platform of preference for using the GIMP. We look forward to continue serving the global MacGIMP community in the years ahead and wish to express thanks to Archei for the funding that makes this site possible.

L.A.Times takes Notice

The Los Angeles Times is running a story on version 2.0 of the GIMP on Linux:
These filters do the amazing stuff you see in advertising, TV/Web animations and other flashy graphics. They include transferring the image onto a seemingly translucent glass globe; changing the photo image into a cartoon and making it look like a stained glass window or a fresco. Also covered in the article by James Coates is a recent book by Klaus Goelker: GIMP 2 for Photographers, which we've covered here before.

XCF File Format Spec Updated

The XCF specification has been updated in CVS devel-docs. Henning Makholm authored this very helpful piece of documentation. For those new to the GIMP, XCF is the GIMP-native file format and is named from the eXperimental Computing Facility at U.C.Berkeley.
